It is almost time, as it seems that all of the kids are ready for those two weeks of no school. So, to honor the last day before break, this update will be short and sweet (just like most of our crafts this week). So let’s get down to business. The time off and the holidays can be stressful for kids and parents.
So what better craft to do than to make HOMEMADE LAVA LAMPS. These are very similar to the calm down jars, where kids combine baby oil, dish soap, water, food coloring, and glitter into jars. When the kids are anxious or angry, they shake the jars and watch the glitter settle. My view is that this represents the brain when it is jumbled and the settling of the glitter is similar to the calming of the brain.
The different between these two emotional calm down activities is that the lava lamps introduce Alka-Seltzer tablets into the mix. When they are dropped into the jar, the reaction disrupts the mixture and makes parts of the concoction rise and fall like a lava lamp. They are so awesome to watch. The reason why a chemical reaction happens is that the carbon dioxide in the tablets releases into the water, causing the carbonation to rise. Let me say that the kids were so excited to watch these reactions.
