Hello everyone! I can't believe that one month has already passed and we are on to October! I must say that I have had a blast getting to know all the kids here at IMS IMPACT! There are so many unique personalities and interests that I am getting to know and it has been so fun! One of our larger highlights that we had was the second annual unicorn appreciation day! We made unicorn frappucchinos, played pin the horn on the unicorn, steal the unicorn as well as designed our own horns and staff-a-corns! Some of my other favorite activities of this month included learning how to play werewolves, which is a favorite among the kids, the slime challenge day and playing name that tune! As I become more antiquated with the school and the kids, I hope to get a leadership group started that will be run by some kiddos that want a more active role in IMPACT! That's all for now, but please check back in weekly to see what we have been up to!
Now that we have our portable and a lot more space, I was finally able to lead this project with the students! The kids learned how to mix and pour cement, and most importantly, how to get dirty and use a little elbow grease!
For this project, we made garden stones out of glass mosaic pieces, cement and chicken wire. The next day, we took the stones out of the cake pans and lo and behold, all of the mosaic pieces were submerged in dried cement! :( Instead of giving up, the students devised a way to scrape off the excess cement - chicken wire, water and A LOT of paper towels. In the end, a little more than half of the original stones remained intact. I will have to revise my methods for next time. The most important thing was the students had fun! Check out our pics below!
More next week!
Last week was our first full week of !mpact and we really hit the ground running with some awesome activities. We did a Minecraft castles challenge, Slime, favorite food plushies, Ms. Nikki had her first Poker Club meeting and of course we had an amazing round of Viral Videos! Check out our pics from last week. More to come in a couple days!

Welcome to IMS !mpact! We are so excited to have returning students and new 6th graders in our amazing after school program this year. Check out our September Calendar to get up to date on all of the super fun and enriching activities we will be doing this month! Some of my favorites are slime creations (happening today!), poker club and Unicorn Appreciation Day! In addition to our planned activities, we will also be taking students on walking field trips (think Boehm's Chocolates, Umi Cafe and the Dollar Tree...), as well as off-campus field trips once a month. There will be a screen party at Beaver Lake Middle School coming up as well as a student choice field trip in November!
Still not enough?!?!
We are also running out of a brand new portable! We are lucky enough to have a new space that the students can call their own - complete with a reading nook, a Keurig to meet all the student's coffee and tea needs (don't forget it's BYOM - bring your own mug!), couches seated in front of a bazzillion-inch TV for video games, and a ping pong table! There is a little bit of everything to meet every kid's unique and special interests.
