Now, like last time, I had a fair amount of skepticism, but also like last time the curiosity, along with the love to just cook/bake things, was there! The sad news was, the activity happened to fall on a day with less kiddos, so after breaking into options, I was left with only four adventurers! The good news was, I was left with only four adventurers. That meant, more for them to do cooking-wise, and really no limit on how many zucchini fries they would want! =D
| Starting out with the customary hand-washing, we set all the stuff out! Aashi help me a lot this day in many ways starting first with the peeling of the onion. She came back later thwarted by its outer layer...even I struggled, haha, but we together we defeated it! |
The onion wasn't actually part of the activity; it was extra from a previous activity, and I thought I'd sauté up some onions for the kids seeing as none had ever had them before! They were mostly a hit, but some we not sure how they felt about them. ;D
While Aashi cut the onion, the rest of us prepped the batter and the eggs. There was a lot of goofiness and excitement overall, especially in the cracking of the eggs. I don't know what it is, but kids always fight over who gets to crack the eggs. Lucky for them, the recipe called for enough that each of them got to crack at least one. ^_^
| Those steps done, we set to cutting the zucchini into French Fry shape. Now, I've actually never done this myself, but even still was able to figure out a way to make zucchini strips. So, wanting them to try figuring it out as well, I told them I'd just winged it myself and let them try out their own cutting ideas! |
They did pretty good! I only gave a few pointers/ideas, but otherwise they problem solved the zucchini to fry problem well. =]
Lastly, we dipped the strips into the whipped eggs, then into our breadcrumb concoction. This was, I think, they favorite part. I mean, how often do you get to play with raw egg? I mean, not play. O_O I mean, stick your fingers into raw egg while rolling a zucchini strip around in a completely calm and unplayful manner. We don't play with our food here. Not at all...O_O
| After we baked them up, and fried up the extras that didn't fit on the pan as an experiment, we all taste tested them...minus one who could not be won over, haha. Oh yeah! We also made a dip! ...It was not the best. But also not the worst, haha. ;D They all liked them! We, who tried the pan-fried one, agreed that although also good, the baked were better. |
So overall, another successful zucchini adventure! Thank you girls for trying new foods with me!
