Here at Rocket Club playing outside is always an option, but as the days have grown shorter and the rain has become more frequent we've had more inside play. Designing activities for the kids is an important element... we want them to learn AND have fun. This week we had a "make your own pie" activity on the calendar but I wanted to add another layer to this and make it more than just treat time for the kids.
Using premade mini graham cracker pie crusts, a variety of pie fillings to choose from, LOTS of fun toppings, and whipping cream made by the kids themselves (they were surprised that not all whipping cream comes from a can!), we turned the activity into them designing a "fancy pie plate presentation".
I told the kids to pretend they worked in a fancy restaurant and their task was to create a masterpiece dessert that they would serve to their customers. They needed to think about how someone else would feel paying for their dessert creation, and take pride in using their imagination to make something that someone else would enjoy.
The results were so much fun, and of course they got to see each other's creations... and eat their own when it was done! Here's some pictures of our 3rd-5th grade group and the lovely things they made! We are doing this project again today with the K-2nd grade group and I can not wait to see what they will come up with.
Enjoy!
