This week at Rocket Club, I wanted to share one of my favorite childhood games with the kids here. That game being the Pokémon Trading Card Game. While Pokémon cards a still a popular item among kids, I wanted to teach them how to use collectable cards the way they were intended.
So I did just that. To begin with, we went over the basics of the cards, detailing the meaning of each element. I used a video projector to make sure everyone could see the individual elements we were discussing. After learning about the cards themselves, we went into how to play the game.
I find that learning by doing is a great way to learn. The kids were split into two "teams". Within their teams, they would take turns learning how to take a turn in the game. One kid would play a turn, and then the other team would go. Once it reached back to the first team's turn, the next person in line on that team would then come up and play the hand.
We had a lot of fun playing and learning the game. I personally enjoyed sharing one of my childhood passions with the kids.
